Sorry about the mess, doing a little spring cleaning. I have the sneaking suspicion that I’ll have some visitors stopping by some time soon.

You see, I’ve finally been “outted”…and by outted I mean I went on my friend’s podcast and chattered incessantly about lots of crazy stuff, proudly waving my geek flag, getting my facts wrong, you know, the usual La stuff…and I may have let it slip that I have this here rather new design/dye blog.

And by let it slip I mean made the grand announcement. Now the episode isn’t ready for download yet (kinda feel sorry for Cheryl and her bleep button), but it will be soon, like in the next day or so. So, if you’re interested check it out: Diva Knitting Podcast (episode 8 when it’s up)

In the meantime, I’ll just be spiffing the place up a little bit, putting on a pot of coffee, and maybe even baking some cookies.

Oh! I almost forgot. I made you something…

You know, just in case you wanted one.

I’ve got some excellent news! Last year, my friend Gina put a call out for help on behalf of her lovely tortie named Snickers. She needed assistance raising money for an expensive and much-needed surgery Snickers needed. I know how hard it is to admit when we need financial help, let alone ask our community for that help. Gina’s no different. She stated that she wished she had something to give in return, and that’s when I designed a pattern just for her to give out to all those who donated to her kitty’s kitty.

Now, come January Gina posts a State of the Snickers Address. Snickers has recovered much of the use of her injured leg! So much so that her quality of life has returned to almost normal, making it so Gina has no more need to raise funds. Hoqw awesome is that? So, Gina released the rights to the pattern I designed for her and Snickers. May I present:

A Hug For Snickers

The scarf calls for approximately 3 balls of worsted weight yarn, knit on US size 7 [4.50 mm] needles. Hugs-and-Kisses cables flank a center of cat-face and cat’s paw lace in this sweet bit of whimsy rolled up in a scarf that celebrates all those wonderful things that make our cats the adored and treasured creatures they are.

Linky for Ravelers. Otherwise, either click the button below, or go to the Dizzy Blonde Designs page and scroll down.

You want to knit it, you know you do!

Big Damn Sweater March 6, 2008

I was a big damn holdout! I refused to see it when it was on TV, and then I refused to see the movie when it came to theaters. It wasn’t Star Trek, Star Wars or Babylon 5, and it sure as hell wasn’t Buffy.

Finally I got around to catching the movie when it was on a premium channel, and thought…not bad. not bad at all…. Then one day Fickleknitter invited me over for some knitting and a bit of Maya cuddling, flipped on the TV and popped in a DVD. That low-down deceiving deceiver forced me to watch Firefly! Okay. Sure. It was entertaining, but I wasn’t seriously hooked until I saw THIS sweater for the first time…

The pilot4

In “Out of Gas” and then again in “The Message”. You mean to tell me that the people in THIS universe don’t have an endless supply of clothing? Holy cow!

Figures. The wonderful stories, the cleverly real dialogue, the amazing actors nor the finally-got-it-right science of science fiction couldn’t melt my cold, unfeeling Star Fleet-issued heart. It took the knit to do that. It was at that moment that I vowed to recreate that sweater, if it’s the last thing I do…and it just might.

I started with the cable…

Pretty close huh? You would think, but I got it wrong.

In the screen cap on the left, there is no termination point at the top and bottom of the small curving cable. Also, I’ve crossed the ropes too frequently. All easily enough to fix. Or do I want to? There are a couple other knitters who are working up an exact duplicate of the sweater…well as much as can be duplicated exactly without being able to see the entire sleeve…

…and having to work off of screen caps and such. Also? They’re missing a few other pieces of the puzzle as well…pieces that I had to dig and dig to find.

Pieces like sleeves cuffs

Bottom edges…

and fully-frontal.

Besides, if I keep the termination points on the smaller cable, it’ll make mine slightly different and more appealing to my sense of aesthetics. Also, it’ll cover my butt so no one thinks I’ve infringed on their copyright. This pattern, as as few others I’ve got in the works, will be inspired by Firefly. Keep flying!
