Uh, what was that? Where’s Morning Glories? Uh…yeah…well, about that. She’s in the time-out closet. No, she’s not on restriction, no I’m not angry with her. I’ve just been overtaken by obsession lately. Well, okay, obsession’s not quite the word for it, but it’s a lot easier than typing OMG, these designs are making me crazy! With all their not-quite-rightedness, and their constant need of debugging tweekage….so I’m ignoring everything else, and the only reason MG sits in the time-out closet is that her bag has no zippability thus requiring stashage – away from a little needle-chomping Dizzy Blonde. sheesh! And WAAAAH! the yarn I’m using hurts my hands after a while, but that’s beside the point (and whiney). So, to make things easier, and this post WAAAY shorter (too late?), let’s just say I’ve been obsessed by design lately. Want a peek?

blanket close

Charts are 90% done, long-hand instructions are about 65% done, I’m even test-driving a name that I’m not entirely hating. My math’s been checked (thank you Ava), I’ve got my test-knitter lined up, and I’ve wasted as much time knitting the prototype as I’m gonna with sCRAP yarn. So now it’s time to suck it up, put on my big girl pants and knit it fer reals.

Also I’ve been working on a scarf pattern for a friend to offer up as a thank-you for a fund-raiser. More on that once the pattern’s in her hands, which should be some time next week. Much to my embarrassment, this design has taken me much longer to work out that it should have. Either I’m WAY too much a perfectionist with my own shit, or I just didn’t think things all the way through, but DAMN, it seemed like every time I picked it up, there was one issue or another. I think I have it now, of course I just jinxed it, so I’m sure there will be yet one more bug to, uh…debug. yeah

cat face lace

If you’re thinking that looks somewhat familiar, you’d be right. Jen let me use her adorable cat’s face lace pattern from her socks of the same name. Speaking of which…I need to queue up 2 pairs of those socks!

Speaking of adorable cat faces, you can’t see it here…

New neighbor

wantz

…but trust me, this little guy’s got one! One Saturday as I was walking the dogs, he followed me home, sauntered right up to the front door, and commenced to yowl something fierce when I put the front door between us. After I reassured Sassy that my Queen Cat Covenant still stands (when Momoze died I promised her that I wouldn’t get another indoor cat while she still lived), I spent some time in the front courtyard with this sweet little guy (whose purring rattled the windows), After about 20 minutes of heavy petting he decided that he’d visited long enough, went on his merry way. Later that day I saw him down the block (spelled that b l o g) hanging out with some kids playing beach volleyball, where one of the boys scooped him up and took him home. I was so afraid that someone just dumped him in our neighborhood, I am so glad that’s not the case, and a little disappointed cuz a teeny tiny part of me wants to steal him, but not enough to upset the delicate equilibrium that is my household. Besides, I can’t really afford a divorce right now, you know? At least he still comes around for pats and scritching every once in a while. Hmmmm. I wonder…do you think the tuna might have something to do with that?

birthdaybunny
Happy Birthday Debi! Hope all your wishes come true. Many happy returns!

~~~~~~~
While everybody and their friend, and their friend’s sister, and their sister’s cousin, once removed, were off Harlotting here in LA, Clan Fickle and I were all about the Lobster.
There were boats…
Lane Victory
The Lane Victory on her return trip from Catalina Island Michelle has more boat pictures here.
and where you have boats, you have pirates…
Hollywood pirates…
PotCPirates
From Left to Right: Treva Etienne (aka Hottie MacHotterson), Fickleknitter, Mr. Fickle (holding Little Miss Fickle), Isaac C Singleton, Jr., La, Michael Barry & Vince Lozano
…and really scary (I’m talking baby-crying-scary) pirates…
Scary Pirate
The DH and Little Miss Fickle
…persons of extremely questionable taste…
WTF
Hey, whatcha gonna wear to the marina today?
My crack-ho-meets-pimp-Disney outfit, what else?
Sweeeeeet!
We arrived a little too late to get a good spot for the LobsterDog Parade, but, evidently it’s hard work…
Lobsterdog
We shared a patch of breezy shade with that little lady and her 2 siblings. Prior to the that photo-taking, they all had little lobsters on their backs, and when they swarmed other dogs it looked like a total waddling crab attack!
We LOVED the breezy shady patches where we visited, baby played/admired/oogled, sat and knitted, and got no pictures of because we were too busy chatting and oogling and sitting and, well…knitting.
And leave it to me to go to a festival all about the seafood, and walk out of there with yarn…
Score!
Chaos
If you’re the kind a person to get a wild hair up your ass and decide to design something, oh…say, a baby blanket, and even though you’ve only designed one other thing before in your entire knitting life and that just so happened to be a baby blanket, and even though your new design is built on the same shape as your previous design, you’re wanting the two to look completely different, wanting the new design to reflect your growth as a knitter…
~You may be tempted to chart your design at the same time you’re writing it out long-hand;
~~And as you’re charting, you may just want to get a little ahead of your long-hand instructions;
~~~And as you get a little ahead in your charting, you may just want to finish up an entire repeat. And because your new design is knit from the center out, your design and pattern increase need to incorporate your increases, and you decide to start knitting it;

~~~~And once you finish up your entire first repeat, you might, in your infinite laziness then decide to make a gagillion xeroxed copies of your chart, so with further repeats you don’t have to rechart everything, you just have to cut and tape. Which, in your mind, is a stroke of brilliance;
~~~~~And in that stroke of brilliance you just might fail to realize that the first part of the design pattern that you’ve made a gagillion copies of, the one you’re so proud of and patting yourself on the back about is only a partial pattern because you were incorporating the pattern WHILE building up enough stitches;

~~~~~~And in your infinite oblivion, and general cocky contentedness, you may continue to fail to notice, even after knitting up what you’ve written so far, and inviting others into your dumbassery by asking for volunteers to check math.
~~~~~~~And then it hits you. Square in the fucking head. DOH! Man, I’m a dumbass!

Learn from my mistakes, my friends, learn from my mistakes.

Yeah, so that project went on hold over the weekend. In time-out is more like it. Let it sit and think about just how that made me feel. Instead I worked on some Udones.
Toes

And yeah, they’re still ugly, and I’m so the opposite of thrilled with the yarn, but it’s perfect for these reenactment socks, and at least I’m no longer knitting garter (spelled that Farter at first) stitch in the round…on purpose. And if you think the toe looks rather long narrow to you, I’d say you were right, but I’m too lazy to rip and start all over. I’ll just cast on more stitches when I start the next pair.

Next up: Sherman (Encroachment) heels for the first time.
